Our Mission
Our mission is simple: you should get paid on every valid invoice. We won’t quit until we’ve collected your money or your customer is insolvent.
When you hire our collection agency, you have California based professionals working on your behalf, not overseas call centers. We do not use predictive dialers, letter series, or script reading collectors. We use a custom approach on each claim after discussing all key details with clients on each individual claim.
The high caliber of our debt collectors and our unique techniques enable us to produce an 85% success rate on large viable claims. Many of our collectors have advanced college degrees (MBAs, JDs) and extensive business experience as senior executives and international negotiators before joining our commercial collection agency. Collectively they have completed over $500 million in mergers, acquisitions, and licensing deals for technology, media, manufacturing and service businesses. This experience allows us to have a much higher success rate on large and small claims than the average collection agency.
We also have an in house law firm. We do a full second debt collection effort under the name of the law firm if we haven’t had success under The Kaplan Group name. There is no upfront charge for this service and no extra cost – our contingency rate remains the same when we collect under our law office name. Over 97% of our successful collection efforts are achieved without going to court. For those rare occasions when we can’t collect without litigation, we have a nationwide network of attorneys at the ready to handle your case on a contingency basis.

We Understand Business in San Jose
For over 30 years, our principals have been providing business consulting and negotiation services to companies in San Jose and throughout the Silicon Valley. We’ve developed business plans for start-ups, strategic plans for mid-sized companies, and negotiated for and with many of the largest multi-national companies in the technology, mobile, and media industries. We’ve raised venture capital, held senior executive positions at early stage companies, and traveled the world negotiating mergers, acquisitions, intellectual property licenses and music distribution deals on behalf of these clients. This experience has given us a deep understanding of how business works for these clients including their customers in virtually every industry throughout the USA and the world.
The insight we have developed during from this experience is now used to produce outstanding debt collection results for our clients whoever their non-paying customers might be wherever they are located. When you understand the services your clients provide, their contracts, and their customers, you naturally will have much more success than someone who simply knows an invoice has not been paid. Collection Agency Tips for San Jose Businesses
We are constantly surprised by the number of companies that will wait 2 or more years before turning a claim over to our collection agency. In over 90% of the cases, there was no good reason for the delay.
Every year a survey is completed and published showing how the collectability of accounts decreases dramatically over time, as shown in the graph below.

Many companies do not turn claims over to collection agencies promptly because the contingency fee eats up most or all of the profit on an order. We understand that. However, getting 75% to 90% of what you are owed, but no profit, is far more important than getting nothing. Plus, undoubtedly you have been putting time and energy into collecting the outstanding invoices, and that is a true cost. That effort could have gone in to your good customers and building your businesses rather than dealing with the occasional problem account. So, the longer you wait, the higher your internal cost and the higher the likelihood you will never get paid.
Our larger clients evaluate their internal collection results trying to find the tipping point of when it makes sense to escalate the collection process. They determine number of days past due at which their collection success declines significantly. That is the time to stop using internal resources and shift the cost outside. That results in immediate cost savings, and it also gives their collection agency the best chance of being successful with the claim by turning it over sooner rather than later.
